Radiation Safety Training & Consulting
and Laser Injury Expert Witness
High-Rez Diagnostics (HRD), offers expert, on-site safety training and consulting services covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum, including laser, radio frequency (RF) and ionizing radiation. HRD provides facility safety audits including power density and exposure level measurements. These on-site classes are provided to and tailored for users or manufacturers of radiation sources and safety officers (LSOs and RSOs). HRD provides laser injury expert witness services for plaintiff and defense.
Richard S. Hughes, Ph.D. is a physicist with more than 30 years of experience in radiation source and electro-optics research and development and more than 25 years of providing radiation safety training and consulting services. He has also provided radiation safety training outside the United States for the past 15 years.
Training courses are customized at no additional cost to meet the specific needs of each client. Course durations vary significantly depending on the type of training (topic, initial vs. refresher, user vs. safety officer, etc.). HRD utilizes the latest electronic audiovisual presentation technology including digital projection with PowerPoint, etc.
HRD offers the following courses (select as desired for more details on each topic):
Training Philosophy and Methodology
Dr. Hughes uses an interactive style of presentation, that is, course attendees are encouraged to ask questions, express safety concerns and make comments at any time. Also, he believes that the atmosphere of a large class inhibits two-way communication and thus a maximum class size of 30 is highly recommended.
Radiation Safety Consulting Services
Consulting services offered by HRD include assistance in establishing new radiation safety programs, review of existing radiation safety programs with regard to compliance with federal, state and local regulations, radiation safety audits (surveys), complete laser hazard analyses (eyewear optical densities, nominal ocular hazard distance and nominal hazard zone), minimum approach distances, etc. for RF, and estimates of organ-specific doses resulting from exposure to x-ray and gamma-ray radiation.
The HRD client list includes:
- Law firms in California, Colorado, Idaho and Washington
- Universities (including Stanford University, University of Southern California and Indiana University)
- Corporate research laboratories
- Production facilities, including laser manufacturers
- Over 30 Department of Defense installations
- The Canadian Department of National Defence
- Several NASA and Department of Energy facilities
- Federal and California OSHA
Charges for training and consulting services are comprised of a modest, door-to-door daily fee plus expenses. To encourage manageable class sizes, HRD has a policy that for each attendee over 30, an additional $100 per day is charged.
Charges for expert witness tasks are comprised of two hourly rates (one for case presentation and a second for deposition and trial), plus expenses.
